MU* games can be accessed using a raw telnet connection, though it's generally not advisable to use it. There are a variety of free and shareware programs on the net to facilitate MU*ing in much easier and cleaner ways than raw telnet. This post deals with some of the different free programs available, what sort of system (Mac, PC, whathaveyou) that they're designed for, and what sort of programs (MUCK, MUSH, MUD, etc.) they're designed to use with.

This is the program that I personally use. It works with PCs, specifically Windows and similar systems and will handle MUSH, MUX and MUCK, which are the standard 'social RPG' systems. It /can/ handle MUD, MOO and a system called 'Talker' but may glitch occasionally.

This program is designed for UNIX/LINUX based machines. It will reliably handle MUSH, MUX and MUCK, but has trouble with MUD. I've never tried it with MOO or the 'Talker' system.

Tintin is another UNIX/LINUX based program, however it is specifically designed to handle MUD's.

Savitar is supposed to be an all-purpose MU* client designed for the Macintosh, specifically. Unfortunately, I have never used it myself, though I'm told it's good.
